Job Description

HealthFitness has a great opportunity for a full-time (40 hours per week) Assistant Director of Aquatics - Event & Lifeguard Management within our MIT Aquatics Program located on-campus in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In this position, you will be responsible for planning, organizing, and managing all competitive aquatic events including NCAA Swim, Diving and Water Polo competitions, as well as state and regional age group and high school competitions. You will also assume functional and administrative responsibility for the supervision and development of two Aquatic Supervisors and 40 lifeguards and will oversee the programming and development of the American Red Cross Health and Safety offerings.

This position is within the MIT Recreation program in Cambridge, MA, which is managed by HealthFitness. This premier program includes a 150,000-square-foot facility complete with an Olympic 50m pool, Instructional 25yd pool and a satellite facility with a 25yd lap pool and instructional pool. Additional features of the facilities include extensive fitness activity space housing cardiovascular and strength equipment, squash courts, multi-activity court and 3 additional athletic facilities housing multiple gymnasiums, an indoor track and ice rink, and more! Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Direct, manage, mentor and evaluate a full-time Aquatic Supervisor and a large team of lifeguard personnel (including recruiting, hiring, training, etc.) to ensure safety and the quality of programs, practices and events.
  • Manage all special events sponsored by the Aquatics Department (including varsity, club, outside rental groups). This includes preparing and managing event budgets; organizing equipment, event set-up/breakdown and scheduling event support; serving as onsite event manager, responding and troubleshooting all issues during event operations.
  • Responsible for the planning, promoting, and management of all American Red Cross Training programs, expanding existing program offerings, as well as other outreach efforts.
  • Act as a liaison between Aquatic Director and Lifeguards.
  • Attend administrative staff meetings.
  • Complete special projects and other duties as assigned.

Education, Experience & Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelor s Degree.
  • Prior management experience working in aquatics, recreation, athletics, physical education or related field.
  • Certifications: CPR for Professional Rescuer, First Aid, Lifeguard and American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor.
  • Knowledge of swim, dive, water polo and other aquatic events.
  • Ability to multi-task while possessing a professional demeanor and attitude.
  • Experience working for a collegiate, Municipal athletic or recreation department.
  • Excellent verbal and written skills; and quality customer service skills.
  • Experience using Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

Preferred:

  • Master s Degree.
  • Experience managing various aquatic events and technical knowledge of both Hy-Tek Meet Manager and Colorado Timing Systems products.
  • 2-5+ years management experience working in aquatics, recreation, athletics, physical education or related field.
  • Certifications: Certified Pool Operator, SCUBA, Lifeguard Instructor/Trainer and WSI/Trainer.
