TECHNICAL ASSOCIATE II, Biological Engineering, to join the laboratory of Professor Katharina Ribbeck. Will provide technical assistance on multiple high-impact projects as part of an innovative research lab. This will include the isolation and purification of mucus components for the development of therapeutic agents that can control problematic pathogens, development of microbial screens that enable the identification of mechanisms by which mucus attenuates virulence, development of mucus-based in vitro systems that enable stabilizing and manipulating the human microbiota from the intestine, and a collaborative effort with clinicians to identify biomarkers in mucus that signify pathogen invasion and infection. Primary responsibilities will include developing and implementing biochemical protocols for mucin isolation from different surfaces of the body (e.g., saliva, intestine), analysis of microbial phenotypes in mucus model systems, and designing and performing microbial multiconsortia screens to evaluate co-existence in natural mucus.
REQUIRED: a B.S./B.A. (masters preferred) in molecular biology, microbiology, biological engineering, or related field; at least four years laboratory research experience in a biology, microbiology, or biological engineering lab, including extensive experience with routine protein biochemistry techniques including protein purification methods and troubleshooting; willingness to learn new techniques/protocols; excellent organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills; self-motivation; attention to detail; and familiarity with and strong track record of adhering to laboratory safety protocols. Must be able to work independently and as part of a team, plan and troubleshoot experiments, carefully document and maintain work in detailed written records, and function effectively in a fast-paced and dynamic research environment.
