Serves as a member of the companys Senior Discovery Leadership team, responsible for portfolio advancement.
Sets strategy to achieve chemistry goals for multiple candidate-directed programs and for novel small molecule platform technologies.
Drives scientific/technical excellence, identifies and fills gaps in technology, and expands the medicinal chemistry capability.
Uses state of the art medicinal chemistry techniques to identify lead compounds and through lead optimization to deliver quality clinical development candidates.
Collaborates with enabling chemistry technologies groups including Structure Based Drug Design, Cheminformatics and High Throughput Chemistry, as appropriate, to enable and accelerate medicinal chemistry programs through hit to lead (HtL) and lead optimization (LO) phases.
Coordinates the transition of new target programs from the Exploratory with in vivo PoC to LO.
Allocates chemistry resources to ensure support for HtL / LO activities
Collaborates with dedicated DMPK, toxicology and safety pharmacology teams in support of Discovery programs.
Uses multi-parametric optimization and safety predictor tools to identify lead and candidate compounds with a high probability of clinical success.
Monitors external intellectual property landscape and attains strong intellectual property positions for Discovery programs.
Directs and coordinates medicinal chemistry resources across programs.
Establishes innovative research concepts and proposals to management.
Implements productive interactions with consultants and collaborators
Ensures compliance with applicable Corporate and Regional Policies and Procedures and with standard company protocols.
Manages leaders and their teams by fostering scientific excellence and best practices.
Delegates and prioritizes strategy and tactics with direct reports.
Identifies and recruits top talent. Ensures professional development of staff to their full potential.
Represents the function internally and externally at scientific meetings, advisory boards, expert panels.
We seek candidates with the following qualifications:
Must have a PhD in Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, or related field.
Requires a minimum of 15 years of pharmaceutical or biotech industry experience, with increasing responsibility for small molecule drug discovery.
Must have proven scientific leadership in science-driven drug discovery work and in operational excellence.
Must have a track record of scientific innovation and accomplishment in medicinal chemistry, evidenced by publications, intellectual property, and technology development.
Demonstrated success in delivering multiple small molecule clinical candidates into IND and through clinical development, required.
Requires the ability to globally coordinate and collaborate with internal and external teams.
Must have the demonstrated ability to develop efficient discovery processes.
Requires a proven track record of managerial excellence including leading a team greater than 10, managing cross-site collaboration, and managing relationships with CROs.
Must be able to foster creativity, productivity, accountability and execution with a sense of urgency.
Requires experience in strategic planning, laboratory and budget management, and project leadership in a matrixed organization.
