The Department of Performing Arts invites applications for a full-time Artist-in-Residence to serve as the Artistic Director of Emerson Stage, the producing organization within the Department of Performing Arts comprised of the students, faculty, staff and guest artists of the department. The one-year renewable appointment begins September 1, 2019 with a mandatory 2-day orientation August 22 & 23, 2019.

Primary Duties, Responsibilities, and Tasks

Emerson Stage is the production company within the Department of Performing Arts and produces nine to ten fully staged major productions annually in five theatres, with additional production opportunities available to our students through curricular projects, student theatre organizations and ArtsEmerson, the College s professional presenting company. In its structure and processes, Emerson Stage models professional theatre making practices and seeks to expand, respond to and create the next generation of theatre-makers. Season selections are based primarily in the training needs of our students as evident in a varied curriculum encompassing BFA programs in Acting, Theatre and Performance, Musical Theatre, Theatre Education, Theatre Design Technology/Stage and Screen Design Technology, Stage and Production Management, and Theatre (which includes Directing, Playwriting, Dramaturgy, Theatre Studies, and Arts Management), and an MA/MFA Program in Applied Theatre/Theatre Education. Serving at the pleasure of the Chair, the Artistic Director leads the season selection process by working with an Advisory Committee comprised of curricular area heads, student representatives, professional production staff and management leadership. The AD identifies and recommends guest directors, serves as the supervisor of all directors, attends production meetings, rehearsals as necessary and facilitates the casting process for all Emerson Stage productions. Other performance related activities for community events, development/institutional advancement may be required as well. Faculty members in this position will also teach 2 or 3 courses (8-12 credits) per academic year in the AD s area of specialty and may direct one show each season as a course equivalent during the Emerson Stage season, starting with the 20-21 season.

The Department of Performing Arts is home to one of the nation s leading programs in theatrical performance, design, stage management, and theatre education/applied theatre. With a team of 90 full- and part-time faculty and professional theatre staff members, the department enrolls 530 students in nine distinct undergraduate programs and one graduate program. As well, the department offers a core curriculum required for all majors and general education courses in Theatre Studies open to all majors in the college.

Emerson College is the nation s only four-year institution dedicated exclusively to majors in communication and the arts in a liberal arts context. It is located in the dynamic multi-cultural city of Boston in close proximity to major arts institutions, performing art venues, and research centers. The college enrolls 4,446 undergraduate and graduate students from 52 countries and all 50 states.

Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will have a terminal degree or equivalent professional experience in an area of theatre related to this position, including directing, acting, dramaturgy, arts administration, stage or production management, community engagement, applied theatre, theatre for young audiences, or theatre education. In addition, a candidate should be an experienced theatre artist, curious about new techniques and models of theatre-making, able to build consensus while taking risks, able to acknowledge and incorporate the six areas of theatre training offered at Emerson through production and skilled in navigating sensitivities around texts, casting, and racial, ethnic and gender identity. Three years of experience in professional theatre as well as experience teaching at the college level or in a conservatory setting is required. Candidates must have demonstrated ability to work effectively with faculty, students, and staff from diverse backgrounds.

Primary responsibilities for this position include:

1.Oversee the artistic mission and administration of Emerson Stage, the production company within the Department of Performing Arts, in accordance with the college s and department s educational mission, consulting with faculty, staff, and students and making recommendations/reporting to the Chair of the Department of Performing Arts.

2.Lead the season selection process for the Emerson Stage seasons by working with Emerson Stage Planning Committee to identify curricular needs best fulfilled through Emerson Stage productions; determine the appropriate balance of types of texts and productions as they fit in a three to four-year training cycle. Convene monthly planning meetings at a minimum; share notes from these meetings with all committee members. Create all season announcements. Attend all casting meetings, including area heads in casting decisions as needed. Solicit scripts for NewFest/New Play Workshop each season, reaching out for a diverse range of voices to be considered. Serve on the reading/selection committee for the NewFest production and New Play Workshop production.

3.Identify and interview potential guest directors for Emerson Stage seasons; serve as the point of contact for all Emerson Stage directors during pre-production, auditions, rehearsals and performances. Provide orientation for guest directors, familiarizing them with all Emerson Stage policies and practices.

4.Attend weekly production meetings for all Emerson Stage productions; attend rehearsals as needed, greet and welcome the company at first rehearsal, attend dress rehearsal and provide any feedback requested from directors.

5.Solicit and interview all assistant directors for upcoming seasons and assign to productions in consultation with directors.

6.Take an active role in the prevention and solution of any problems during an Emerson Stage production, working closely with the general manager, production manager, director, faculty adviser, student, guest artist.

7.Represent Emerson Stage as the public voice of the organization and seek to maintain a high profile for Emerson Stage within and beyond Emerson College.

8.Solicit casting and breakdown information from directors, coordinate open-call auditions and call backs with General Management; work closely with directors and management on casting issues as they arise, working with actors, directors and any other affected areas.

9.Communicate and collaborate with ArtsEmerson, Boston s leading presenter of contemporary world theater.

10.Teach two-three courses in area of expertise.

11.May direct one Emerson Stage show per season or be involved in a leadership role in one production as a course equivalent.

12.May serve as area head for the BFA Theatre program.

Additional responsibilities include mentoring students and serving on department and college committees. The department is engaged in identifying and removing barriers to admission and casting for working-class students and students of color. The successful candidate will bring expertise to this dialogue.
