Product Engineer

Senior Staff or Team Lead

Job Description

The Product Engineer is responsible for supporting the development of core technology and manufacturing processes for advanced fiber and fabric systems. The individual will work as part of team serving both internal and external customers to deliver technology and product demonstrators. Focus of efforts is on transitioning component-level fiber devices into integrated product forms spanning diverse market segments including apparel, transportation, architectural, medical and others.

Job Responsibilities

  1. Assist roadmap, technology demonstrator, or proprietary projects and product development
    1. Design and execute experiments based on experimental data, literature review, and consultation with senior staff
    2. Perform hands on laboratory and machining work including but not limited to: milling, lathing, electrical connections, fiber drawing and clean room operations.
    3. Develop, optimize and troubleshoot analysis and testing methods including but not limited to: microscopy, electronics characterization, optical through IR spectroscopy and mechanical testing.
    4. Works in conjunction with senior staff and technicians to provide improvement, troubleshooting, process development and validation. Works through problems and acts quickly, efficiently and relentlessly until root cause is determined and solution is found.
    5. Performs administrative functions, materials sourcing, vendor inquiries, exploration of new technologies as required to effect rapid and efficient project progression
    6. Maintains laboratory equipment and facility
    7. Works efficiently, minimizing distractions and manages time to accomplish work by expected deadlines.
    8. Provides regular reports on progress to leadership and during team meetings
  2. Assists leadership team in coordinating submission of proposals and external communications.
  3. Coordinates schedules of staff and other interested parties.


Out-of-the-area and overnight travel may be required a few times per year.

Required Education, Experience and Competencies

  • BA/BS in Science or Engineering field and minimum of 3 years of related experience required; graduate-level degree in Science or Engineering field preferred
  • Completes tasks in resourceful and effective ways
  • Experience in fiber drawing, fabric formation, polymer processing or polymer science a plus
  • Energetic and hands-on experimentalist, eager to work on new initiatives and drive them to completion in a fast-paced start-up environment
  • Strong planning and time-management skills with ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Attention to details
  • Adaptive and flexible with ability to work collaboratively in cross-functional teams
  • Able to work independently making decisions based on current results
  • Strong communication skills

The position requires either U.S. citizenship or permanent residency.
